The formation
On the night of Wednesday 22nd February 2006, a group of fourteen budding and curiously dramatic individuals met at the LGBT Centre for Health & Wellbeing with David Dalzell to hear about plans to form Edinburgh’s first LGBT drama group. A few weeks and a series of workshops later, and the group had evolved into The Luvvies!
After gathering momentum during the spring of 2006, plans were quickly afoot to bring to Edinburgh our inaugural performance of cabaret & vignettes in ‘A Taste of Heaven & Hell’ which touched on the lives of the whole lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. We launched ourselves to a packed audience at the Cafe Royal in Edinburgh, with laughter, tears and not a little dramatic style.
Torch Song Trilogy marked our first full stage run of theatre, and we performed the trilogy at Adam House, Edinburgh 21st - 23rd June 207, and again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on 11th, 12th and 18th August 2007 at Edinburgh's Theatre Workshop.
What do we do?
The Luvvies are here to:
- take part in producing pieces of dramatic theatre
- with the aim of putting these on stage for the general public
- produce dramatic theatre that expresses aspects of the
lives and experiences of the LGBT community
- link to other groups within the LGBT Centre for Health &
Wellbeing, Edinburgh, to enrich creative input, and skills of
theatre productions
- provide a forum to facilitate development of artistic and
organisational skills including any creative role connected
to theatre.
What do we get at the end of it?
- Increase the self-esteem and confidence of the
membership
- raise awareness of LGBT issues
- contribute to a community spirit for LGBT people, and to
help connect this to the wider community
- provide a vehicle for self-expression within the
LGBT community
- provide members, their family and friends, and the public
with a source of entertainment!
