Pitching for The Luvvies

What is Pitching Night?

It's where we decide what productions we hope to do in the next year, and is always an exciting and fun night. All are welcome - you don't need to have a play to pitch to come along!

Anybody may propose a production for the next year (whether that's a fully-planned proposal, or just an idea). If you just wish to sit in and hear what's being proposed and have a say, that's OK too - so please come along!

For those who wish to propose a fully-fledged production, please follow the guidelines further below.

If you have something to propose, then now's the time to make those final finishing touches!

How do I submit a production proposal?

We accept nearly anything related to the performing arts, be it a play, film, workshop, etc. Of course the Luvvies Committee have to be able to evaluate each proposal for technical feasibility, whether it falls within our budgets, and whether it meets the Luvvies criteria on acceptable topics laid down by its constitution.

If possible, all detailed proposals should be sent by email to secretary@theluvvies.org, ideally at least a week before the Pitch Night so that the Committeee has a chance to read them through.

If you have an idea for a production, but not a full production proposal, it will usually be possible to raise this at the Pitch Night without a previous submission (although a note of your idea submitted beforehand helps the committee to plan the agenda, but it's not essential).

What should my Production Proposal contain?

  • If this is a NEW SCRIPT for a play, then include the full copy of the script. This script will not be made available outside of the Luvvies committee
  • If this is an EXISTING PLAY, if possible any information on whether we have the rights to stage this and what kind of costs would be involved.
  • If this is an IDEA FOR SOMETHING NEW, be as accurate but concise as you can to describe what you are proposing.

Also, with each submission, please include answers to as many of the following questions as possible (the more questions you answer, the easier it will be for the committee to assess your proposal, and the likelier it is to receive a positive response):

  • How does your proposal explore or represent the lives of the LGBT community?
  • In your own words, why do you think The Luvvies should produce this?
  • What is the (approximate) cast size and what is the makeup of that cast in terms of men, women and/or TG people.
  • Are there any specific set, sound and/or lighting requirements?
  • Are there any specific costs or constraints in addition to normal staging costs/constraints we should know about?

What happens on the Pitching Night itself?

  • Everybody who submits a proposal is also required to organize a pitch
  • If the submitter isn't present, or wishes not to pitch themselves, he/she must assign someone to pitch on their behalf
  • A pitch must last no longer than 15 minutes. This may be shortened to 10 minutes depending on the number of submissions

Afterwards?

The public portion of the pitch night usually finishes at 8:30 PM - the Luvvies Committee then discusses and evaluates the submitted pitches. The productions selected for the coming year are announced at the following AGM.
